Congratulations to this year's Hillsboro Swim Team. The Swimming Burros have grown from 1 swimmer three years ago to 18, making this year the biggest and the best! Team members included: Agustin Balaguer(11), Kim Brown(9), Casey Drumright (9), Hanan El-Abd(11), Erdi Erdem(11), Corey Fey(9), Greyson Findley(10), Catherine Gaines(10), Parker Hawkins(10), Eric Hudiburg(9), Callie Jennings(Captain)(11), Roni Levy(11), Sarah Kate Nelson(11), Ylva Ronnelid(11), Rebecca Senn(9), Lillian Siman(11), Vincent Weimann(11), and AlexeyYermalitsky(11)
The team this year was one of the most internationally diverse teams at Hillsboro. Three of our swimmers, Hanan, Ylva, and Vincent are exchange students from Egypt, Sweden, and Germany, and three students, Agustin, Erdi and Alexey live in Nashville, but are from Argentina, Turkey, and Belarus. Hanan, Ylva, and Vincent will be missed next year. They added a great deal to the team with their humor, kindness, and determination to excel. We all hope they keep swimming when they return to their home countries at the end of this school year.
This year also marked the first time the Hillsboro team was able to practice at the Green Hills YMCA. The team was coached by Nathan Phillips who led practice three days a week, preparing the swimmers for 4 dual meets as well as the Regional and State Championship Meets.
The Swimming Burros came in 3rd in the Division I Dual Championship meet. Four swimmers made qualifying times in 15 events and swam in the High School State Championship Meet in February, where state times are required prior to entry. Parker Hawkins, Callie Jennings, Rebecca Senn, and Alexey Yermalitsky represented Hillsboro in individual events. Hillsboro also had a men's relay team made up of Corey Fey, Erdi Erden, Alexey Yermalitsky, and Parker Hawkins, and two women's relay teams made up of Kim Brown, Casey Drumright, Roni Levy, Callie Jennings, and Rebecca Senn. Freshman Rebecca Senn swam to a 12th place finish in the 100 yard freestyle and 100 yard backstroke making her the only 9th grader at the State meet to make the top 16 in the 100 Free. Out of the 9 teams in Division I, Hillsboro was the only school to score points in the State Championship.
