The School

Hillsboro High School opened in 1939 and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. In 2005 Newsweek Magazine named Hillsboro the 5th ranked public high school in Tennessee, 496th out of 27,468 schools nationwide. Hillsboro is a recognized International Baccalaureate World School with nearly 1300 students, who come from over 40 different countries. The school follows a semester system with one-half credit earned per course each semester.

The Students

Student enrollment for the 2006-07 school year is approximately 1250. The class of 2007 consists of approximately 260 seniors which 68% are expected to enroll in a four year college, with 16% attending a two year institution.

Athletics and Extra Curricular Activities

Hillsboro athletics are numerous, varied and successful. Sports opportunities for the students include Baseball, Basketball, Bowling Cheerleading, Cross Country, Ice Hockey, Football, Golf, Lacrosse, Soccer, Softball, Tennis, Track, Volleyball, Wrestling. Extra curricular involvement is offered in Marching Band, Orchestra, Sophisticats (our performing vocal group), Youth Legislature, Bill of Rights, Quiz Bowl, Theater, Debate, School Newspaper and others.

The Curriculum

For the class of 2006-07, Hillsboro High School requires 22 credits accumulated in high school level courses: 4 English, 3 mathematics, 3 science, 3 social studies, 1 lifetime wellness, 1 physical education, and electives to total 22 credits. Students must choose a college, technical or dual (college and technical) diploma path. Students choosing the college path must earn 2 credits of the same foreign language, 1 credit in fine arts and must also complete Algebra I, geometry and Algebra II. International Baccalaureate Diploma students follow the college path but are obligated to complete the specific requirements to earn the IB Diploma. Students choosing the technical path must earn, in addition to the core credits listed above, 4 credits from one designated technical cluster. Students choosing a dual path must complete the requirements for both the college and technical paths.

Hillsboro High offers 14 Advanced Placement courses for the 2006-07 school year. They are Art History, Art Studio, Calculus (AB and BC), English Language and Composition, English Literature and Composition, Environmental Science, European History, French, World Geography, Spanish, Statistics, US History and World History.

There are 17 International Baccalaureate classes offered in the 2006-07 school year. They are Biology SL, Biology HL, English III, English IV, Environmental Systems, French, History of the Americans III, History of the Americas IV, Math Methods, Math Studies SL, Math Studies HL, Psychology, Spanish, Theater SL, Theater HL, Theory of Knowledge and Visual Art. Most are open to all students who wish to earn an IB Certificate in the course but are not working toward an IB Diploma.

Honors level courses are offered in Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, Pre-Calculus, Biology, Chemistry, English I, English II, English III, English IV, Spanish II, French II, World History and US History.
