December Minutes were submitted and approved.
Executive Committee - 3 requests were approved including 2 for Gateway material and one for art history
Principal's Report - We are rocking along. There was a nice article in the City Paper about the girl's basketball team. You may have heard rumors about my status. I will be retiring on June 30th. My reasons are health related. I have been blessed with a great staff. It is an awesome responsibility and I have a great love for Hillsboro.
Student Council Report - A huge thanks to Mr. Lawson from the student council and entire student body. He has made a great impact on the school and students. The Coming Home elections will be next week. The event will be Jan 26 against Hillwood. Kendyl Cheatham's home burned down over Christmas break. She is the school mascot. The Coming Home voting will be a fundraiser for her and her family. We will collect change instead of votes. We will also collect old cell phones and will canvas our Pencil Partners to see if they want to make donations. There is an upcoming environmental student group presentation on ways to save energy in the school. We received over 200 thank you letters from the Edge Hill Center. We provided Christmas for 140 kids.
President's Report - We may change the May meeting to May 10th to avoid conflicting with the spring sports banquet. There are handouts available for parent seminars being held by a private company at the Hampton Inn. We got several thank you notes from the teachers for PTSA support in general and specifically for the luncheon before Christmas. It was catered by Steve Morris and likely cost much more than we paid.
Treasurer's Report - a copy of the budget is on the tables. We paid for the teacher lunch and got more Invest dollars in.
Cluster Report - There will be a cluster-wide meeting on the standard school attire at Hillwood on Mon. Jan 22 at 6:30. Charles Badger is on the evaluation committee. The next issue is the budget. Funds are likely to be cut again this year. Our transportation budget, however, is much larger that other systems of proportional size. Ideas are needed for saving money.
Guidance - Meri Kock - We enrolled 40 new students this semester, many from out of state. The PSAT scores will be given out Wed. The PLAN Scores will be given out the last Wed in Jan. My Quick Start at the College Board web site is a great tool for analyzing the PSAT scores. It gives you the information to correct your answers. The YWCA Youth Advantage Program will start again this spring. It is about how to get and keep a job. There will be one in Feb and one in April. There will also be a Teen Screening for Depression later this year.
Invest - Checks are still coming in; the tax letter will be going out the end of the month.
Band Boosters - We have 3 9th graders at MTSU with the all Mid-State band. The Italian Ice fund raiser at the basketball game is doing well when it is warm and not as well during the cold. We will also sell them during baseball, softball and soccer. There is Maggie Moo's fund raiser coming up. Also, there is one Hillsboro rep in the state bowling tournament.
Tours - We need more tour guides. We provide training. If interested, contact Stephanie Brakefield (thebrakefields@comcast.net).
Newsletter - the deadline is tomorrow.
Kroger Cards - A drawing was done. The Honor Society will be at Harris Teeter on the 20th to link cards to Hillsboro. We have $700 from Harris Teeter so far this year.
Alumni/Bluebird - Bluebird at the ‘Boro will be March 15th. We are still recruiting talent; the publicity and design committees will meet next week.
Announcements
The Nominating Committee will be working a slate the next 3 months. If interested in serving on the Board, contact Sally Goodrich (goodrich@comcast.net) or Russ Pulley (pulley.daniel@dol.gov).
Spence Hobson, a 2006 HHS graduate and brother of a current junior, had a bad fall before the break. They will be bringing him back from Knoxville to Vanderbilt soon. His condition is very serious. Donations can be made at 1st Tennessee Bank. The account is in the name of the Second Presbyterian Church.
We need to get the word out about open enrollment.
Respectfully Submitted
Sue Ferguson
