Remember you MUST have a picture ID with you when you take the ACT or SAT.  Also don’t forget your calculator and at least two #2 pencils (not mechanical) .

Two ACT and two SAT Fee Waivers are available for junior or seniors who qualify for Free or Reduced Lunch.  See Mrs. Hinton in guidance to for this form.

All Juniors need to take the ACT and or SAT the spring of their 11th grade year. Juniors on Free or Reduced Lunch can receive a waiver from the ACT to pay for this test.  Please see your counselor for the voucher.

Seniors who have not taken the ACT or SAT need to take it in December.  The State of Tennessee provides one voucher for either test for every senior.  See Mrs. Hinton in guidance to pick up this voucher.  Seniors paying with a voucher must use a paper packet to register.  We encourage everyone else to register online if possible.

To request an official transcript be sent to a college, seniors need to fill out a green transcript request card.  These can be picked up from and turned in to Mrs. Hinton in guidance.  Requests for transcripts and letters of recommendations need to be turned in to Mrs. Hinton or your counselor 10 school days before the date it is due.

The www.collegefortn.com website is available for students to research and apply for colleges.  Other features include career assessment and ACT/SAT test preparation.

Admission Deadlines:  November and December are full of deadlines for college admissions. Be sure to check with the schools your student is interested in to make sure you don’t miss one of these important dates.

Letters of Recommendation need to be requested 2 weeks prior to the date they are needed.  Please give a stamped and addressed envelope as well as a written request to the teacher or counselor you are asking to write the letter.

Scholarships:  Most colleges and universities offer their own scholarships.  Some you have to apply for and some you are automatically in the running for when you apply to the school.  Many employers have scholarships for their employees and their children, check with the Manager or the Human Resource Department.

Tutoring Help Available for Any HHS Student

"Don't know much about history…"  Help is available.  There are two after-school tutoring programs at Hillsboro – the Freshman Learning Center for 9th graders and the National Honor Society program for grades 10-12.  Last semester, few students took advantage of the NHS tutoring program.

Hillsboro wants parents to be aware of these services and encourage their students to utilize them if needed.   NHS students, along with students from Vanderbilt University, will tutor any student in grades 10-12 in any subject each Tuesday and Thursday afternoon from 2:15 to 3:15 in Room 116 (Ms. Lucy Organ's room).  They can even help students improve their study skills.  NHS tutoring sign-up forms are available in Ms. Denise Grey's office (Room 220) or you can contact Mr. Christian Sawyer (Room 111, 298-8400 x1111 or christian.sawyer@mnps.org for more information.

For 9th graders there is a separate program, the Freshman Learning Center, held every Wednesday and Thursday from 2:15 to 3:15 in Room 223.  For more information contact Ms. Liz Gibbons at 298-8400 x1223 or elizabeth.gibbons@mnps.org
