- History -

Hillsboro High School officially opened October 22, 1939, with an enrollment of 164 students and seven faculty members. Two years later, Medford Bowman, the first principal, was succeeded by John Koen, who directed Hillsboro to a distinguished level of excellence before his retirement in 1964. Initially, the school served a rural area. Later population increases, re-zoning, the Vocational Educational Act, and 20th century influences have resulted in changes from a two-story red brick building in a pastoral setting to a set of massive white buildings which were designed by nationally recognized architects. On October 31, 1952, the first school was destroyed by fire. With admirable espirit de corps, a unified student body and a dedicated faculty never skipped a beat, thanks to the generosity of two local churches who kindly provided facilities. Several renovations have occurred since the replacement of that building in the 50's. Hale Harris, Taylor Hagen, and Dr. William Hicks followed the highly respected and greatly admired Koen, and continued to lead Hillsboro forward until 1979 when Dr. Jean Gray Litterer was appointed as principal. After a 20 year career as principal, which seemed just a little too short, Dr. Litterer stepped down from her office. In 1999 James Overstreet, a long-time member of Hillsboro's staff, was named principal. In the fall of 2002 Jim Overstreet accepted a position at the Metro Nashville Board of Education leaving Hillsboro after 13 years of service. Stepping in during that school year was Robert (Bob) Lawson who was no stranger to the campus, having had 3 of his children graduate from Hillsboro. Mr. Lawson lead with the same zeal as his predecessors.

- Alma Mater -

Hillsboro here's to you
Our alma mater.
Constant and fond be true
We will be ever--
And as the years go by
Forget thee never.
Oh happy memories--
Cherished forever.
Hillsboro, here's our song
our alma mater.
School days to you belong,
Tears mixed with laughter,
Now we pledge anew
Vows broken never,
Oh happy memories--
Cherished forever.

- Fight Song -

Dynamite, dynamite, when Hillsboro starts to fight,
Down the field with blood to yield if need be
Save the shield.
With victories done and battles won
Hillsboro's name will rise in fame
To win or lose our fates will choose,
Hillsboro's name will be the same
Hey dynamite, hey dynamite,
When Hillsboro starts to fight. HEY!

Hillsboro has a plan for security, bad weather, fire, etc. These drills are practiced periodically with the teachers individually and with the entire school population. This security plan enables Hillsboro faculty and staff to respond quickly to an emergency. All teachers, support staff, cafeteria staff, and custodians are familiar with the security plan. We also have a Metro police officer assigned to our school. Officer Griffin handles all volatile situations.

Library hours are 6:45am – 2:30pm . There are 15 computers available with Internet connections. In order to use the Internet, the student must return his/her Internet Permission Form. All library fines must be paid and books returned or replaced before your final grade card will be given to you.

There are 11 sports represented at Hillsboro for boys and/or girls. There are gate fees for athletic events. Some are required by TSSAA; others help support individual sports. Metro does not give funds to assist athletes. Hillsboro , however, has an Athletic Booster Club which helps all sports teams. Students may purchase a special discounted Booster Club membership each year which entitles them to enter all home sports events (except tournaments) without paying.

Students may drive their cars to school only when they have registered. This registration form asks for student's name, license plate number, and the make, model, and year of car. They can be picked up in Officer Griffin's office. Driving privileges can be taken away if the student does not demonstrate safe driving. Reckless driving will not be tolerated. Yellow numbered spaces are reserved for the staff. Visitors may park in the parking spaces below the library designated as "Visitor parking." Bus riders are picked up in front of the building or in the parking lot opening to Glen Echo Road . Car riders should be picked up in the circle in front of the school at 2:05 . This delay allows the buses to leave. Do not block buses or other cars. The drive along the South side of the school is very congested in the morning and at dismissal. It is suggested not to go against the flow of traffic. No one should try to enter the school from Richard Jones Road around 2:00 .
